According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, 21 million background checks were conducted for the sale of a firearm in 2020 - a 60 percent increase over the previous year. NSSF also estimates that about 40% of these sales have been to first-time gun owners. Added to this is that Black Americans now account for the highest increase in gun sales of any demographic.
